Check out Daniela Ribeiro’s story about how her life completely changed through Jiu-Jitsu.
Hi Daniela, can you please introduce yourself to everyone?
My name is Daniela, and I’m 52 years old. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and I have over 25 years of experience as a pharmacist. I’ve been happily married to Seidler Rodrigo for 20 years, and I’m a proud mom to my 17-year-old son, Pedro.
I currently work at Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Riverton as Manager, overseeing the school’s administration and managing all processes related to membership sales and customer retention.
Moving abroad is a big step; from Rio de Janeiro to Salt Lake County is quite a change. What were the biggest challenges you faced when you first arrived in Utah?
My first challenge was overcoming the language barrier, and my second was managing my daily routine without help.
What role has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu played in your family’s life?
Today, Jiu-Jitsu means everything to me, my husband Rodrigo, and our son Pedro. It has become our work and a new passion that has taught me skills I never imagined I could acquire. I’ve transitioned into a sales role, which has been a significant change for me. Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a job; it’s our lifestyle.
How do you balance supporting both Seidler and Pedro in their BJJ careers?
I strive to support both my son and husband in different ways. For my son, I’m encouraging him to develop a passion for Jiu-Jitsu, just like his dad. I believe it’s crucial for him because Jiu-Jitsu teaches valuable lessons in handling frustration and overcoming challenges—skills he can carry into all aspects of life. With my husband, my approach is more about being by his side and providing whatever support he needs.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Gracie Barra community in Utah?
As I mentioned before, I truly embrace this lifestyle. I love knowing that I’m healthier, and I genuinely believe that we can make a positive impact on both kids and adults through Jiu-Jitsu. Being part of building the community in Utah means a lot to me.
As someone managing a Jiu-Jitsu school in Utah, what are some key values or principles from the Gracie Barra philosophy that you try to implement in day-to-day operations?
The Gracie Barra slogan, “Jiu-Jitsu is for Everyone,” is vital to me. I strive to embody this message with all my students and prospects by understanding their challenges and helping them navigate them through Jiu-Jitsu.
How does your previous work experience contribute to your role as a Jiu-Jitsu school manager?
My previous experience managing pharmaceutical areas has certainly provided me with a strong background in leadership, process organization, and challenge management, which I can apply to my current role as Manager. I am now also developing skills that are less analytical and more relational/emotional, as I interact directly with students and their parents on a daily basis. It’s a significant challenge and quite interesting to navigate the complexities of working with people.
What do you miss most about Brazil, and how do you stay connected to your Brazilian roots while living in Utah?
I miss people, especially my family, and I long for sunny days at the beach. To stay connected to Brazil, I frequently talk with my family and keep up with the news.
Can you describe a specific moment or experience in Jiu-Jitsu that significantly impacted your life or perspective?
I witness the incredible impact of Jiu-Jitsu on students every day. It teaches both kids and adults essential skills for managing frustration, overcoming challenges, improving coordination, and adopting healthier habits, among many other benefits.
One particularly memorable moment for me was when a young, smaller student successfully escaped from an adult who was attempting to choke him, using the techniques he learned in Jiu-Jitsu.
Also, I appreciate how inclusive the Jiu-Jitsu community is. We have students who are blind, deaf, on the autism spectrum, and those with cerebral palsy, all thriving together in this supportive environment.
Would you mind sharing a dream with us?
My biggest dream is to see my son pursue a career he loves, and I would cherish the opportunity to support him on that journey. Additionally, I hope to be part of a big family filled with many grandchildren!
