Why a private

What an hour alone with a coach gives you.

A group class is excellent value and it's where most learning happens. A private does something a group class structurally can't.

Every correction is yours

In a group class, an instructor divides attention across the room. In a private, the session is focused on your technique, so details get identified and corrected repetition by repetition.

You pick the problem

Stuck under side control every round? Guard keeps getting passed the same way? A private is an hour spent entirely on the thing that's blocking you, instead of on whatever the curriculum covered that night.

It fits an impossible schedule

Shift work, travel, small children, a job that runs late. Privates are booked directly with the instructor, so the session works around your week.

Nobody is watching you learn

For some people the hardest part of starting is being visibly new in a room full of strangers. A private removes that. You can ask the question you'd feel silly asking, as many times as you need to.

It breaks a plateau

Everyone stalls eventually, and usually it's one specific detail quietly sabotaging everything downstream. An outside eye tends to find it quickly.

It sharpens a specific goal

A competition in six weeks, a belt test, a self-defense concern you'd rather not raise in a group. Privates let you build a plan around one target.

Who books them

Who gets the most from private lessons.

If you recognize yourself here, an hour one-on-one is probably worth more to you than three group classes.

1

The beginner who isn't ready for a room

Some people want to know the basics before they stand in a class. A private or two is a gentle way in: you learn how to move, how to fall, and what the etiquette is, then walk into your first class already knowing what's happening.

2

The student who's been stuck for months

You train consistently and you've stopped improving. That's usually one fixable detail rather than a lack of effort, and a coach watching only you will find it.

3

The person whose schedule never works

If the classes that fit your week are the ones you can't make, privates are how you train anyway. Worth checking the timetable first, in case something fits.

4

The competitor with a date on the calendar

Game planning, weight-class problems, and drilling the sequences you intend to use. Privates complement your regular competition training rather than replacing it.

5

The student coming back after time off

Injury, a long break, a body that's changed. Rather than guessing what you can still do in a live round, rebuild with someone who can tell you when to stop.

What it costs

How much is a private Jiu-Jitsu lesson?

Two prices, depending on which membership you're on.

Standard rate

Single private class

$120per session

  • One-on-one with a black belt instructor
  • Booked directly around your schedule
  • Available whether you're on the Team plan or not yet a member

Shield & Legacy members

Member rate

$80per session

instead of $120

  • Two private classes included per 12 months of active membership, a $240 value
  • Every additional session at $80 instead of $120
  • On top of unlimited classes at Gracie Barra Riverton

Worth doing the math: Shield costs $5 a week more than Team. In return you get two private classes per 12 months of active membership, worth $240, and every session after them at $80 instead of $120. If you plan to use privates at all, the upgrade pays for itself. Compare all three memberships.

How to book one

Booking a private takes four steps.

1

Call or book at the front desk

Privates aren't booked through the online system. Call (801) 436-7373 or grab someone at the front desk after class.

2

Tell us what you want to work on

Be as specific as you can. "I keep getting stuck under side control" gives your instructor something to prepare. "I want to get better" is harder to build an hour around.

3

We match you with an instructor and a time

Sessions are one hour. Scheduling is agreed when you book, so it fits your week rather than the class timetable.

4

Show up and train

Same uniform and same rules as any class. If you're brand new, we'll lend you a Gi. Expect to leave with two or three things to drill in your next group class.

Common questions

About private lessons.

How much does a private Jiu-Jitsu lesson cost in Riverton?

The standard rate is $120 per session. Shield and Legacy members pay $80 and also get two private classes included every year, which the academy values at $240.

Do I have to be a member to book a private?

Almost everyone who books a private is already training here, and that's the normal path. If you're not a member and you'd like one, call (801) 436-7373 and we'll see what we can arrange.

Are private lessons only for advanced students?

Not at all. Some of the best use of a private is at white belt, when a small habit is easy to correct and expensive to leave alone. Complete beginners book them regularly.

Can I start Jiu-Jitsu with private lessons instead of group classes?

It happens, though it's rare. If a room full of strangers is what's stopping you, a private or two is a good way in, and almost everyone moves into group classes afterwards, because training with different partners is how the skill becomes real.

Who teaches the private lessons?

A black belt instructor. Every instructor at Gracie Barra Riverton is ICP certified through Gracie Barra's program, CPR trained, and background checked.

How long is a private lesson and when can I book it?

A private lesson is one hour. Timing is agreed directly with the instructor when you book, so it fits your schedule. Call (801) 436-7373 and we'll find a slot.

Can my child take private Jiu-Jitsu lessons?

Yes. Privates work well for children who are nervous about joining a group, or for a young competitor preparing for a specific tournament. Call us and we'll match them with the right instructor.

What should I bring to a private?

Your Gi if you have one, water, and a specific question. If you're new and don't own a uniform yet, we'll lend you one.

Do you offer semi-private lessons?

Yes. A semi-private is two students sharing one instructor, which works well for training partners, a couple, or a parent and child. Call (801) 436-7373 and we'll set it up.

Where do private lessons take place?

At our academy, 2936 W 12600 S, Ste 1&2, Riverton, UT 84065, with free parking right in front. Students come in from South Jordan, Draper, Bluffdale, and Sandy.
